The Earl of Buckland is a title in the Peerage of the
United Kingdom. It was created in 1947 for the Royal Air Force flying ace Air-vice
marshal James Johnson (1908-2003) who served in both Europe and the Far East. James
Johnson was married to Pauline Windsor with whom he had two sons Charles
and George. Pauline died in childbirth and James later re-married with Janet Partridge
with whom he had a daughter Maureen.
James was a bit of a rouge in his younger days. He was
heavily in to shooting sports, liked to ride and followed the hunt. He also
like motor sports, motor bike racing and in his later years was a bit of a
heavy gambler. He was considered by Pauline’s parents not a true gentleman
James was educated at Harrow, Oxford and Sandhurst
Following James Johnson’s death from cancer in 2003 The
Earl of Buckland passed to his eldest son Charles John Johnson (1930-2013) a
brigadier in the British Army Royal Logistics Corps who, like his farther,
served in both Europe and the Far East. Charles John Johnson died from lung
cancer accompanied by a stroke in 2013. His cancer went on undiagnosed due to a
shrapnel wound scar, contracted in Malaysia, on his rib cage masking his
illness. Charles was married to Barbara Pearce, who was born in a Japanese
prisoner of war camp in Singapore, with whom he had four sons Robin, David,
Raymond and Michael.
Charles was a
quiet man in his private life and unlike his father didn’t participate in
active sports apart from shooting
Charles was educated at Eton, Oxford and Sandhurst
The Earl of Buckland was then succeeded by Charles’s
eldest son Robin Charles Johnson (1963 - ) a Lieutenant Colonel in the British
Army Royal Electrical & Military Engineers who served in The Falkland’s,
Northern Ireland, The Gulf and the Balkans. Robin was married to Julie King
with whom he had two daughters Alice and Amelia. Following a divorce in 2001
Robin went on to marry a Chinese doctor Xiaoying Xie and adopted her daughter
Annie Johnson
Robin is an active shooting man like his father and
grandfather often rides and enjoys his dogs.
